Headaches are one of the most common health problems that can affect anyone. Most headaches will be spontaneous recovered or by taken painkiller medication and are not serious conditions. However, headaches are also one of the most common symptoms experienced by those with brain tumors or intracranial cause. It’s important to figure out what type of headache is causing your pain. If you know your headache type, you can treat it correctly.

Types of Primary Headaches

  • Tension Headaches : Tension headaches are the most common form of primary headache. Such headaches normally begin slowly and gradually in the middle of the day. Episodic attacks are usually a few hours in duration, but can last for several days. The characteristics is dull aching pain at forhead region and mild severity.
  • Migraine Headaches : Migraine is the second most common form of primary headache and can have a significant impact on the life of an individual. Migraines typically present with unilateral pulsatile in characteristics, moderate severity, nausea, vomiting, photophobia (sensitivity to light) and phonophobia (sensitivity to sound). Most migraines last between 4 and 72 hours.
  • Cluster Headaches : Cluster headaches is less common and affect men more than women. The pain is usually on one side of the head, very severe, and can be accompanied by tearing or red eye, sweating, and stuffy nose on the affected side. It typically lasts for less than 1 hour and tends to be recurrence at the same period.

As headaches can be a symptom of a serious condition, if they are more painful and disruptive than previous headaches, worsen, or fail to improve with medication, you may have a brain hemorrhage, brain infection or brain tumor. You should seek immediate medical advice and get a correct diagnosis, such as CT-Scan or MRI.

Characteristics of Secondary Headaches (Serious Conditions)

  • Sudden severe headache.
  • Headache gets worse or fail to improve with medication.
  • Headache that rouses you from sleep.
  • Have a fever, changes in vision, weakness of the arms and legs, nausea or vomiting.
  • First time headache when you turn 50 years old.
