Accidents can happen anytime, anywhere, especially young children during 5-6 years olds. Parents should pay extra attention to them because their fragile bones can be broken easily by a minor accident.

Dr.Perajit Eamsobhana, Pediatrics Orthopedics at Vejthani Hospital said that 60% of children in particular age commonly have fracture of lower end of the upper elbow bone (Supracondylar Fracture of the Distal Humerus) cause by play-time accidents. The presenting symptoms are painful stretching elbow and obvious swelling. If parents notice these symptoms, should seek medical diagnose immediately.

Possible Complications

  • Veins injuries
  • Nerve injuries
  • Misshaped elbow

First Aid & Treatment

A splint is used first to immobilize the joint, the broken elbow bone should be splinted in most comfortable position, bend the arm in a 20-40 degree position.

The treatment depending on the type of fracture. In case of non-displaced fractures, the doctor will set the broken bones back into place before applying the cast. If the fracture is displaced, reduction into a good position and fixation with metal pins to attach the broken bone is recommended to better stabilize the break and the broken bone will be placed in a cast for 4 weeks.

The doctor will schedule a follow-up appointment for 3-7 days after the procedure to make sure the bone is healing properly.
