Differences Between the Symptoms of Coronary Artery Disease and GERD

Share:

Many people often confuse the symptoms of acid reflux and coronary artery disease, as both can lead to chest pain. However, the underlying causes are quite distinct. By understanding the differences between these two conditions, patients can better manage their health and take proactive steps to prevent potential complications.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)

Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or acid reflux, occurs when acid in the stomach flows back into the esophagus, causing a burning sensation in the chest, a bitter taste in the mouth, or sour belching. Symptoms often occur after eating or when lying flat.

Symptoms of GERD

  • A burning sensation in your chest (heartburn)
  • Sour or bitter taste in the mouth
  • Burping or nausea
  • Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)

Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)

Coronary artery disease is caused by the accumulation of cholesterol-rich deposits in the arterial walls. Over time, this leads to a reduced blood supply to the heart, resulting in chest pain, which may worsen when exercised or stressed.

Symptoms of Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)

  • Chest pain (angina)
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue
  • Excessive sweating and palpitations

Key Differences

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD):

  • Often occurs after eating or lying flat, with a noticeable burning sensation in the chest

Coronary Artery Disease:

  • Chest pain occurs during physical exertion or when stressed, and it feels tightness or squeezing in the chest.
