Bone marrow produces red blood cells, platelets and white blood cells and if the bone marrow defects occur, it will affect the production of blood cells and platelets causing a bleeding disorder and unexplained bruises on the skin.
There are several causes of bone marrow defects which include inherited genetic conditions such as Fanconi’s Anemia, Dimond-Blackfan anemia, etc.; and acquired causes such as Aplastic anemia, Myelodysplastic disease or blood cell malignancies.
Basically, the doctor will diagnose the bone marrow defect by using bone marrow biopsy or along with chromosome checking. The treatment procedure depends on the severity of the definite diagnosis of bone marrow defect. The treatment includes symptomatic treatment, medication, and stem cell transplantation or bone marrow transplantation. The stem cell transplantation or bone marrow transplantation is a treatment procedure in which the patient receives healthy stem cells to replace the damaged stem cells. However, for patient considering the stem cell transplantation or bone marrow transplantation must discuss the risks and benefits with the doctor before undergoing the treatment procedure.
