Be aware of Thyroid Gland before it malfunctions

“Thyroid” is one of the most essential endocrine glands in the body. Its function is to produce thyroid
hormones that impact various systems in the body. If thyroid gland malfunctions, often time the organs
in almost all the systems are affected.

Malfunctioning thyroid can have an impact on our body. The abnormalities of thyroid function can be
divided into 3 following types:

  1. Enlarged thyroid gland causes a lump to appear in front of the neck but can still produce
    hormones normally.
  2. Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland is overactive to the point where the
level of hormones in the blood is higher than usual.
  3. Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland is underactive, causes insufficient
    thyroid hormones in the bloodstream.

Symptoms of abnormal Thyroid Gland

  • Enlarged Thyroid Gland: Some patients may have pain around the lump area, difficulty breathing during sleep and difficulty swallowing.
  • Hyperthyroidism: Fatigued, palpitations, sensitivity to heat, excessive sweating, frequent hunger, weight loss despite large consumption, low concentration, stress, insomnia, frequent defecation, in some patients 2-3 times a day. Female patients may experience light flow during
menstruation. Male patients may feel muscle weakness around their biceps and upper thighs. Some may have enlarged liver, yellow skin, or yellowness around the eyes. Severe stages of hyperthyroidism can lead to heart failure.
  • Hypothyroidism: Slow movements, weariness, sleepy, slow mental function, slow speech, depression, no concentration, muscle weakness, tendency to have muscle pulled or muscle strained, heavier or irregular menstrual period. Patients with severe symptoms may have fluid accumulated in certain parts of the body, such as the lungs or heart.

Treatments of Thyroid Disease

Those who have enlarged thyroid gland should have their symptoms closely monitored by ultrasound along with undergoing thyroid cancer screening test. If thyroid gland is overactive, it can be treated with medication to prevent the excess production of thyroid hormones, or by
taking radioactive iodine or treat with surgical method. In cases where thyroid gland is underactive also known as hypothyroidism, synthetic thyroid hormones will be used to restore the insufficient amount of hormones the body produces. Once hormones have been completely
restored, your body will reverse to its normal state. The important factor is to maintain the restored level of hormones in the body for a lifetime. The most suitable treatment method depends on the condition of thyroid in each patient.

Scarless Thyroidectomy – enhances the quality of life after the surgery

Benefits of Scarless Thyroidectomy:

  1. No visible scar on the neck.
  2. 4k images for endoscopic procedures which enhance the visibility of the important organs during operation.
  3. Leaves a small incision and causes less injury during the surgical procedure, which results in faster recovery.

Before undergoing Scarless Thyroidectomy, the function of thyroid hormone in the body has to be controlled to a normal level. Like most surgical procedures, refraining from eating and drinking at least 6-8 hours prior is required. The patient will be under general anesthesia with intubation during the operation.
