A Quick Guide to Some Cancers and Treatments
One of the most feared medical conditions in the world, in terms of diagnosis and treatment, is Cancer. A cancer is an abnormal growth of cells that affect the functioning of the body. These cells cannot be controlled by the body and so they destroy the body from within by multiplying and invading tissues across the body.
Cancerous cells group together into a growth known as a ‘tumour’. These tumours can be cancerous or noncancerous; they are sometimes called “benign” or “malignant”. Ideally, it would help if cancer is detected early and the treatment is takes place as soon as possible but there are many approaches to dealing with cancer. Let us discuss some types of cancer and how we can treat them.
Chemotherapy
Targeting cells that grow and divide quickly, chemotherapy is one of the most widely used methods to treat cancer. Through a combination of drugs given orally or through injections, the treatment cycle of chemotherapy will be repeated every two to four weeks.
Unfortunately, chemotherapy has many side effects. Cancer cells are not the only types of cells that grow quickly in the body. Chemotherapy has also effected to other cells as well such as hair follicles, skin cells and intestinal cells. This results in hair loss, dry skin, nausea, vomiting and other side-effects.
Lung Cancer
Lung Cancer is considered to be one of the most common cancers in the world. The main risks and causes for lung cancer are smoking, air pollution, family history and age. Smoking greatly increases your risk of lung cancer and it needs to be avoided at all costs. Some of the common symptoms are chronic coughing, breathing problems, chronic fatigue, coughing up phlegm and blood and chest pain. There is a new test to diagnose lung cancer called Low-Dose CT Scan, it is especially effective for adults between the ages of 55-75 that have a history of smoking. Smokers need to ensure that they get checked for lung cancer regularly as early detection can really save lives.
Colon Cancer
Colorectal cancer or colon cancer starts out as a small growth in the bowel wall called colorectal adenoma, in most cases. If left untreated this can lead to serious problems in the muscles in the bowel wall. Symptoms of colon cancer include blood in the stool, narrower stool, change in bowel habits and stomach discomfort to name a few. There are many ways to diagnose colon cancer but a colonoscopy is one of the most effective. If the colonoscopy procedure detects colon cancer tumours then surgery is considered to be the best method. However, chemotherapy or radiotherapy are also options, if recommended by the doctor.
