Tuberculosis is a common disease in Thailand. According to the World Health Organization, Thailand had 123,000 new tuberculosis cases in 2022. Tuberculosis can affect anyone, so it is vital to be aware of the dangers of tuberculosis and learn how to protect yourself.

Tuberculosis is a contagious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The disease is often transmitted through coughing, sneezing, or close contact with a person with active tuberculosis. Common symptoms of tuberculosis include coughing, coughing up blood, fatigue, weight loss, and fever. However, tuberculosis is a curable disease, but it is essential to complete the full course of treatment as prescribed by your doctor, as there is a risk of relapse. Treatment for tuberculosis involves taking antibiotics daily for about 6 months.

Prevention:

  • Receive the BCG vaccine for protection against tuberculosis, which is administered once at birth.
  • Wear a mask in crowded places
  • Avoid close contact with patients who have tuberculosis symptoms

Remember, tuberculosis is treatable. If you have persistent symptoms, a doctor’s visit can lead to a proper diagnosis and a successful treatment.
