Are you suffering from hand injuries, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Dupuytren’s Contracture, or Congenital defects? If you are suffering from these mentioned diseases, you may need a hand surgery.

Hand surgery is a broad term that incorporates a vast array of different types of surgery on the hand. The surgeons who perform hand surgery attempt to restore not only the function of the hand, but also try to maximize the aesthetic appearance of the hand.

The procedures involved in the hand surgery are includes Tendon Repair Surgery, Nerve Repair Surgery, Surgical drainage and debridement, Joint replacement, Fracture Treatment, and Skin grafts.

Tendon Repair: Tendon Repair Surgery may be classified as primary, delayed primary, or secondary. Primary repair of an acute injury is usually completed within 24 hours of the injury. Delayed primary repair is usually performed a few days after the injury, but while there is still an opening in the skin from the wound. Secondary repairs may occur in case of the delay more than six weeks; tendon reconstruction procedure may be considered in this stage. Primary repairs usually involve direct surgical correction of the injury, while secondary repairs may include tendon grafts (inserting tendons from other areas of the body to replace the damaged tendon) or other more complex procedures.

Nerve Repair: Damages of the hand’s nerves derived from injury may result in decreased ability to move the hand and experience feeling. Some nerve injuries may heal on their own, while others require surgery. If severed, the nerve may be repaired by reattaching it directly to the other end of the nerve, or by using a nerve graft.

Surgical drainage and/or debridement: The treatment for infectious of the hand. The surgical drainage is used to help remove the collection of pus. And, the debridement will be used to prevent further infection and to boost the healing.

Arthroplasty: Also known as “joint replacement”, may be used in people with severe arthritis. The available joint parts for treatment are finger and elbow. This procedure involves replacing a joint that has been destroyed by the disease with an artificial joint. The artificial joint may be made of pyro carbon, titanium, silicone, or patient’s own body tissue (such as tendon).

Fracture Treatment: This treatment includes both close and open reduction as well as fixation. This type of surgery realigns fractured bone with plate and screws implant and then immobilizes the area during the healing phase.

Skin grafts: Replacing or attaching skin to a part of the hand that has missing skin.

After the surgery, the patient will be recommended to receive a course of rehabilitation, both physical and occupational therapy under the guidance of a trained hand therapist in order to enhance the recovery.
