A Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) in children is a common condition. Fever without localizing symptom should be concern UTI.
Infant who present with poor feeding or irritable may be leading sign to concern UTI. They may have pain or a burning sensation when passing urine. A child with a UTI needs to see a doctor immediately to prevent possible complication conditions for instance; blood stream infection, kidney failure and more.
Diagnosis of Urinary Tract Infection: UTI is diagnosed by testing the urine. If there is the infection, white blood cells or bacteria will be found. After that, the urine will be sent to the lab to analyze the UTI or called urinalysis. A health care professional may order Ultrasound tests to find the cause of the pediatric patient’s infection and check for kidney urinary bladder anatomical abnormalities. More special test is needed if there are following conditions; recurrence, blood stream infected or anatomical abnormality.
Treatment: Giving antibiotic to a child takes is based on age, any allergies and the types of the bacteria causing the UTI. Your child may need to admit for intravenous antibiotics if the child is too young or high fever, vomiting and dehydrate.
Prevention: Teach your child to wipe from front to back after urinating, toilet training, don’t be holding urine, softening stool, good hygiene, adequate fluid intake are most important things to prevent UTI.
