Don’t Ignore “Irregular Periods” they could be a sign of Enlarged Uterus

Share:

Women with abnormal menstruations, such as heavy menstrual bleeding, extremely painful cramps, passing blood clots during menstruation, pelvic and abdominal pain, throbbing or cramping pain in the lower abdomen, and painful intercourse, may be having indications of enlarged uterus.

Enlarged uterus may be caused by uterine fibroids or a common disease like Adenomyosis. Adenomyosis is a condition where endometrial tissue that normally lines the uterus, grows into the muscular wall of the uterus, causing chronic inflammations of the muscular wall, and thickening the tissues, resulting in enlarged uterus. This condition leads to painful menstrual cramps and heavy menstrual bleeding.

The doctor diagnoses the disease by gynecologic examination and vaginal ultrasound to assess a proper treatment for enlarged uterus from adenomyosis. The treatment methods include:

  • Pain relievers and anti-inflammatory medications.
  • Hormone medications, progesterone as well as oral medications and injectable contraceptives to reduce pain and menstrual bleeding. This helps delay the growth of the disease.
  • In case of severe symptoms and poor response to medications, the doctor may consider surgical treatment, such as hysterectomy. Nowadays, natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) is used for this method. The procedure is done by a tube insertion through the vagina. This minimally invasive approach leaves no incision on the patient’s body and allows the patient to recover faster than any other procedure.

Abnormal menstruation should not be overlooked. Keep watching out for any abnormalities in the body and undergo vaginal examination every year to prevent such severe diseases.
