Patients with chronic kidney disease are required to change their lifestyle and diet to slow the progression of the disease and reduce the risk of the rapid decline of kidney function. Patients may modify their daily diet as follows:
- Stage 1: The kidneys are functioning normally, but some protein, white blood cells, or red blood cells are present in the urine.
- Recommended lifestyle changes: Avoid smoking and control all conditions that contribute to chronic kidney disease.
- Stage 2: Early stage of chronic kidney disease. Kidney function is around 60-90%.
- Recommended lifestyle changes: Reduce salt intake.
- Stage 3: Mild stage of chronic kidney disease. Kidney function is 30-60%.
- Recommended lifestyle changes: Avoid foods that are high in protein.
- Stage 4: Severe stage of chronic kidney disease. Kidney function is 15-30%.
- Recommended lifestyle changes: Limit fruit intake.
- Stage 5: End-stage of chronic kidney disease. Kidney function is less than 15%.
- Recommended lifestyle changes: The patient must undergo hemodialysis or a kidney transplant to improve their kidney function and overall health.
Currently, hemodialysis and kidney transplants are recognized as safe and effective treatment options for patients with chronic kidney disease, significantly enhancing their quality of life.
