Caution: Second Dengue Infection Can Be More Severe Than the First

Dengue, a viral infection, tends to outbreak during the rainy season. It is caused by the dengue virus, which is transmitted to humans via mosquitoes. Due to an increase in breeding grounds, four strains of the dengue virus have been identified. Alarmingly, those who have previously been infected can be infected again. While the initial infection may cause mild symptoms, subsequent infections can be more severe and even fatal.

While there are currently no specific medications designed for dengue treatment, patients who have been infected with dengue before can prevent the infection from all four strains through Dengvaxia vaccines These vaccines offer a remarkable 92.9% reduction in the risk of severe dengue symptoms, serving as a shield for those who have previously battled this infection. Administered in three doses spaced over six months, the vaccine significantly boosts immunity against the virus. Nine to forty-five years old are eligible to receive the vaccine.

The initial dengue infection may not manifest severe symptoms, it often begins with a high fever that may be temporarily alleviated with medication. However, the fever may resurface and persist for 1-2 weeks before fully resolving. The second dengue infection typically presents with similar symptoms to the first, but due to the involvement of a different virus strain, the risk of more severe complications increases.

The primary symptoms may include 

• High fever, headache, muscle pain
• Fatigue
• Loss of appetite 
• Skin rash and red spots on the skin    

The severe symptoms may cause

• Dehydration-induced shock
• Severe bleeding around the body, including nose bleeding, vomiting blood, bloody stools, and black stools

If symptoms or fever persist for more than 2-3 days, or if red blisters appear on the skin, it’s crucial to seek immediate medical attention for a proper diagnosis and prompt treatment. Leaving dengue infection untreated could lead to life-threatening complications.
