5 Simple Tips for Restoring Sun-Damaged Skin

Did you know summer fun can age your skin by years? Between the sunshine and sweats, the season brings a host of skin problems—sunburn, dull skin, wrinkles, dry skin, and even acne, which is the most common skin problem. If left untreated, this sun damage can lead to premature aging without being aware of it.

Dr. Duangkamol Thasanapongsakul, a dermatologist at Skin and Aesthetic Center Vejthani Hospital, said that the hot weather in Thailand has a negative effect on the skin, causing skin inflammation. It can be noticed from red and dryness. If you continue to stay out in the sun for too long, you may experience skin peeling or sunburn. Hence, avoid being out in the sun for a long time. Even when swimming in the sea or diving, taking a break from UV exposure throughout the day is essential to let your skin recover. Find an instant way to calm your skin after sun exposure is recommended.

5 Tips to Save Damaged Skin from Summer

  1. Always apply moisturizer. After the skin has been exposed to excessive sunlight, redness, dryness, peeling, and even a burning sensation can appear. Moisturizer is essential to combat these effects. Moisturizer helps rehydrate your skin, restoring its natural balance and nourishing it for better strength. This not only soothes irritation but also helps prevent irritation in the future that various factors could cause.
  2. Sunburned skin often shows redness, dryness, and peeling. Resist the urge to pick or scratch, as this can worsen irritation and increase the risk of infection. In some cases, clear blisters may form. Do not touch, peel, scratch, or pierce the blisters yourself, as this may cause a chance of infection. Consult a doctor for severe sunburn.
  3. Apply sunscreen every day. Choose a sunscreen that can protect against UVA, UVB, Visible Light, and Infrared, as these rays contribute to melasma, freckles, dark spots, and wrinkles. Apply sunscreen daily, at least 30 minutes before going out in the sun. Use 1-finger sunscreen method for the entire face and the 2-finger sunscreen method for face and neck. If you have excessive sun exposure or melasma, consider using sunscreen with SPF at least 30 or higher. Avoid sunlight between 10.00 am and 04.00 pm, when the sun’s rays are strongest. If outdoor activities are unavoidable during this time, in addition to sunscreen, wear a wide-brimmed hat, long-sleeved shirt, and long pants, wear a parasol, and wear sunglasses. Sunscreen with enriched ingredients to help repair your skin after sun exposure is beneficial as well.
  4. Drink plenty of water. It will help restore sunburned skin and help it stay hydrated since the skin loses a lot of water from sun exposure. Avoid alcoholic or caffeinated drinks as they will cause further dehydration.
  5. Replenish your skin’s moisture with after-sun production. Sun exposure can leave your face looking dull and increase the appearance of melasma, freckles, and dark spots. Once the irritation (redness, dryness, peeling, burning) subsides, use products that help restore dull skin and dark spots.

Even after consistent sun protection and heavy skin restoring care, sun damage like dullness, melasma, freckles, and dark spots persists; consult a dermatologist to discuss personalized treatment options. There may be medication, treatments, or technologies to help restore skin to look healthy and bright again.
