The “feet” takes all of the body weight and balance the body while walking. Hence, wearing unfit or inappropriate shoes and doing extreme exercise might cause foot and ankle injuries. Besides these risk factors; foot and ankle deformities, cankle, flat feet, or high arched feet causes foot and ankle injuries as well.

Dr. Krit Prugsawan, a foot and ankle orthopedic surgeon at Vejthani Hospital explained that pain and abnormalities in the foot and ankle are caused by 2 main factors such as:

  • External factors: Wearing unfit or inappropriate shoes that aren’t suitable for each activity.
  • Internal factors: Foot and ankle deformities, cankle, flat feet, or high arched feet.

Treatment Options for Foot and Ankle Problems

  • Non-Surgical Treatment: The patients who have mild symptoms can start from physical rehabilitation and wearing foot and ankle support equipment.
  • Surgical treatment: In cases where physical rehabilitation doesn’t work, the doctor might consider giving surgical treatment. Besides open surgery, there is another surgical technique called minimally invasive surgery. The foot and ankle orthopedic surgeon will perform the surgery through the endoscopy, hence, the patient will have only 8 – 10 mm. small sized incisions. The advantages of minimally invasive surgery are less pain and fast recovery.

The foot and ankle problems that can be treated with minimally invasive surgery are Ankle cartilage injuries, Plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendon rupture, etc. However, foot and ankle problems can be prevented by wearing shoes that properly fits your feet, and being more cautious while doing exercise. Most importantly, if you have any abnormalities on your foot and ankle, please seek medical advice from the foot and ankle orthopedic surgeon as soon as possible.
