Testicular Torsion: A Urological Emergency

Share:

Testicular torsion is a sudden and severe twisting of the spermatic cord that cuts off blood flow to the testicle. It is most commonly found in teenagers and young boys and can cause severe pain, swelling, and loss of testicle tissue if not treated promptly.

Although the exact cause of testicular torsion is unknown, here are some factors that might be involved:

  • Polyps in the scrotum may cause the spermatic cord to twist.
  • Family history: Boys with brothers or fathers who have had testicular torsion are at increased risk.
  • Abnormalities of the scrotum: A loose or small scrotum may make it easier for the spermatic cord to twist.

Symptoms of testicular torsion usually occur suddenly without warning:

  • Sudden severe pain on one side of the testicles that stays constant, and nothing seems to alleviate it
  • Swelling of the affected testicle
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • In some cases, pain may radiate to the groin or abdomen on the same side as the pain

Testicular torsion is a medical emergency that requires immediate surgery to save the testicles. If the blood supply doesn’t return to normal within 4 hours, the testicles could be permanently damaged and may need to be removed. If you experience sudden or persistent pain in the testicle, seek medical treatment at the hospital immediately.
