Cellulitis

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of cellulitis often begins with a discussion of the symptoms and a physical examination of the affected area. In severe cases of cellulitis, several tests may be necessary to ensure that the infection has not spread to other regions of the body.

Common tests may include:

  • Blood test. This test will determine whether the cellulitis infection has migrated to the bloodstream.
  • Skin test. To aid the doctor in deciding the appropriate medication, a skin test may be necessary. This can help determine the type of bacteria causing the cellulitis.
  • Bacterial culture. A bacterial culture will determine the sort of bacteria causing the cellulitis.

Treatment

Cellulitis, a bacterial skin infection, is commonly treated with prescription oral antibiotics. It is crucial to inform your healthcare provider within three days of starting the antibiotic if the infection is responding to treatment. Even if you start feeling better, it is essential to complete the full course of antibiotics, typically lasting 5 to 10 days.

In most cases, symptoms of cellulitis begin to disappear a few days after starting treatment. However, certain circumstances may require hospitalization and intravenous antibiotics, such as when signs and symptoms do not improve with oral antibiotics, when the infection is widespread, or when a high fever is present.

There are also home treatments that can aid in the management of cellulitis. Applying a warm compress to the affected area can help reduce swelling and alleviate other symptoms. Elevating the affected area promotes improved blood flow by lowering blood pressure in the area’s blood vessels. Compression wraps or stockings can also be used to reduce swelling and enhance blood circulation, but it is important not to wrap the area too tightly as it may hinder circulation. Additionally, over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen can help alleviate pain and inflammation. However, it’s advisable to consult with a healthcare provider before using NSAIDs, as they may not be suitable for everyone.
