Nonmelanoma Skin Cancer

Treatment

Numerous treatment options exist for skin cancer, varying based on its type and stage of advancement.

  • Surgery stands out as the predominant method for addressing skin cancers.
    • Wide excision: During the procedure, the surgeon excises the tumor along with a border of 3 to 10 millimeters of healthy surrounding skin. The removed tissue is then sent to a pathology laboratory for microscopic examination. Subsequently, a report detailing the presence of cancer within the tumor and its margins is relayed to the doctor.
    • Mohs surgery: The surgeon excises the tumor along with 1 to 2 millimeters of adjacent healthy skin. Meanwhile, the tissue undergoes processing in a laboratory, enabling a thorough examination of nearly 100% of the margin under a microscope while the patient awaits further assessment in the office.
  • In specific cases of early-stage cancers, local destruction of skin tumor cells in particular body areas can be undertaken.
    • Cryotherapy. Liquid nitrogen is utilized to eliminate the cancer cells.
    • Electrodesiccation and curettage. The cancerous tissue is scraped away, and surrounding cancer cells are electronically eradicated.
    • Carbon dioxide laser. Can be employed to eliminate the tumor cells.
  • In specific instances of early-stage skin cancers and pre-cancers, medicine and alternative treatments can be applied to certain body regions.
    • 5-fluorouracil cream or solution. This chemotherapy targets rapidly dividing cells, such as those found in cancer, for destruction.
    • Imiquimod cream. This immune stimulator deceives the immune system into targeting and attacking the cancerous cells.
    • Photodynamic therapy. This destroys tumor cells by administering medication to them and subsequently subjecting the tumor to a specific wavelength of light.
  • Certain skin cancers may necessitate systemic therapies, including the following options.
    • Chemotherapy.
    • Targeted therapy. Utilizing drugs to specifically target the characteristics of skin tumors, this approach aids in halting the growth and spread of cancer by identifying and directly attacking cancer cells while safeguarding normal cells.
    • Immunotherapy. Assists the immune system in combatting cancer cells.
